Literacy Elevates Arizona Families

A proven two-generation model improving kindergarten readiness and adult education outcomes in Arizona’s highest-need communities.

We partner with Isaac School District and Synergy Public School to deliver our LEAF program—supporting families through high-quality early learning and adult education.

Children attend preschool daily with our dedicated teachers while their parents build literacy and life skills through English, GED, or high school diploma classes, parenting workshops, and shared family learning time.

The LEAF Program

When parents are still working toward their education, their children face greater barriers to success in school. LEAF—Literacy Elevates Arizona Families—addresses this challenge by bringing parents and children into the classroom together.

The program provides:

High-quality preschool education for children

Adult education for parents, including English, GED, or high school diploma preparation

Parenting workshops, monthly home visits, and shared family learning activities

Childcare for younger siblings while parents participate

Founded over 30 years ago, LEAF is an award-winning two-generation model delivered in partnership with local public school districts. Each district hosts the program on school campuses, provides meals for preschoolers through their meal programs, and helps deliver adult education and site-level support.

A Stepping Stone Foundation provides core program funding, including:

Teacher and assistant salaries

Classroom materials and supplies

Professional development

Weekly site support and assessments to ensure fidelity to the LEAF model

LEAF thrives through strong community collaboration. Teachers are employed by the district and supported fully by the Foundation—including salary, benefits, and continued training. Together, we build a seamless learning environment for families—rooted in trust, respect, and long-term impact.

More about the LEAF program

Families enrolled in LEAF participate in a formal intake process, which includes a written application, a parent interview, and an orientation to introduce the program model and expectations. We emphasize the importance of full-year participation and mutual commitment from the very beginning.

To support long-term success, families are expected to maintain consistent engagement. If a family’s participation drops below 80% (measured monthly), we work together to identify barriers. This includes a six-week support period with one-on-one guidance and tailored solutions to help the family re-engage fully. While it’s rare, if participation cannot be sustained, families are supported in finding a program that better fits their current needs.

LEAF operates across the full public school year. During that time:

Children attend preschool at least 16 hours per week

Parents commit to at least:

12 hours of adult education (English or GED classes)

8 hours of classroom participation

8 hours of parenting workshops

One monthly home visit

Child progress is tracked through the Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment system. Adult education partners like Literacy Volunteers of America oversee adult learning goals and progress. Day-to-day attendance and development are closely supported by lead teachers at each site.

The year concludes with a joyful celebration that honors each family’s hard work, growth, and commitment. It’s not just a graduation—it’s a celebration of transformation.
