Founded in 1989, A Stepping Stone currently collaborates with Alhambra and Isaac Elementary School Districts in Phoenix Arizona to provide high quality multi-generational learning. Together across two distinct sites, we provide preschool classes for a total of 40 children, childcare for up to 13 younger siblings, and adult education and parenting classes for their parents.

Identified as families whose children are most at risk of school failure due to low literacy in the home environment, children attend a high quality preschool program. Their parents attend English and/or GED preparation classes while younger siblings attend a nurturing childcare setting. At least once a month teachers visit each home to practice family learning activities and discuss progress.

Our History

We provide money for the teachers’ salaries, technical assistance (teacher training and student and parent assessment management), classroom learning equipment, books, and child care for younger siblings while the parents are in their classes and workshops. Our teachers have petty cash for special purchases such as food for classroom pets or ingredients for cooking. In times of family or social emergencies, A Stepping Stone Foundation may provide food certificates, gently used household items and clothing to families.

Because of its wide support base, the foundation is able to provide Holiday Angel gifts for all children 12 years old or younger in each family, as well as new or gently used clothing. End of the year parties and celebrations are jointly planned and enjoyed by families, the partner school districts and A Stepping Stone Foundation supporters.

Why is preschool so important anyway?
Isn’t beginning one’s education in kindergarten early enough?

Children should be ready to begin school healthy and ready to learn. We need to be sure not only to give children a great start, but support their parents to be that child’s first best teacher. Educating the whole family proves again and again by scientific studies to have a great effect on children. In 2007, A Stepping Stone Foundation commissioned an independent evaluation of our programs.
